As a transition zone between terrestrial and aquatic environments, wetlands have irreplaceable ecological value for the protection of species and the maintenance of biodiversity. This year marks the 30th anniversary of China's implementation of the Convention on Wetlands, and a set of data shows the effectiveness of China's wetland protection: at present, China's wetland area is 56.35 million hectares, ranking first in Asia and fourth in the world, with a wetland protection rate of 52.65%. With the rapid development of science and technology, wetland protection is deeply integrated with scientific and technological innovation and intellectual property protection, becoming a new driving force for the protection of lucid waters and lush mountains.
Scientific and technological innovation depicts the beautiful wetland
In winter, the Yancheng Wetland Rare Birds National Nature Reserve is dyed with colorful forests, red-crowned cranes dancing, elk chirping, and spoon-billed sandpipers strolling leisurely, presenting a beautiful ecological picture. Yancheng has 582 kilometers of coastline and 769,000 hectares of wetlands, providing habitat for 680 species of vertebrates. With a large area of wetlands and a large number of organisms, how to grasp the changes in water quality, quantity, air quality, and biodiversity of wetlands in real time? The relevant person in charge of the Yancheng Wetland and World Natural Heritage Conservation and Management Center introduced: "We have set up 37 dynamic monitoring systems in the city's wetlands, which can monitor the dynamic changes of the city's wetlands and the distribution of animals and plants in real time, and integrate the information into a monitoring platform to facilitate the protection of Yancheng wetlands." ”
"This year, the number of red-crowned cranes hatched in Yancheng has reached a new high, which is inseparable from the support of scientific and technological innovation." In order to protect rare species such as red-crowned cranes, Yancheng actively introduces new technologies such as satellite tracking, radar bird detection, AI bird recognition, drones and high-altitude cameras, these innovations are like a pair of discerning "smart eyes", which can improve the accuracy of monitoring while reducing the interference to animals.
Suaeda salsa is an annual herbaceous plant with the characteristics of salt and alkali tolerance, drought tolerance and waterlogging tolerance, and is widely distributed in Yancheng coastal mudflats. This plant can not only fix the surface salt, but also absorb salt in the body, and is an important plant for the restoration and improvement of polluted saline-alkali soil. In recent years, the Management Office of Yancheng National Rare Bird Nature Reserve, Yancheng Institute of Technology, and Jiangsu Coastal Agricultural Research Institute have carried out tidal flat ecological restoration and landscape ecological construction in Suaeda salsa, developed Suaeda salsa ecological restoration technology, broken through the problem of stable planting of Suaeda salsa along the beach, increased the growth area of Suaeda salsa, and restored the wetland ecological environment. In 2020, the Management Office of Yancheng National Rare Bird Nature Reserve submitted an invention patent application for "a planting method and application of Suaeda salsa on coastal beaches" around this technology and was authorized.
